Hagastaden is home to world-leading education and research at Karolinska Institutet and Karolinska University Hospital. It is home to over 170 life science companies (an increase of 50% since 2010) and its infrastructure and ecosystem have attracted several large companies such as Pfizer and AstraZeneca.
Companies setting up here can benefit from the synergies between three universities: Karolinska Institutet (ranked 6th in the world), Stockholm University, and KTH, Royal Institute of Technology. Together they have around 100,000 students.
Opposite the Karolinska Institute is the brand-new Karolinska University Hospital - ranked number 6 globally and number 1 in the EU.
In the area, you will also find the SciLifeLab, a national center for molecular biosciences with a focus on health and environmental research.

A presentation by Johan Weigelt, CEO of KI Holding, that will cover Karolinska Institutet’s innovation system and support, along with introductions to three deep tech start-ups that have spun out from Karolinska Institutet and are part of the Incubator program.
3.45 pm - Imaging, discovery and innovation
Associate Professor Daniel Lundqvist, Senior Research Specialist |Docent. Department Neuro Science
Lundqvist is an academic leader and researcher within the medical imaging field, and is today the Director of the Centre for Imaging Research, a joint initiative between Karolinska Institutet and Karolinska University Hospital. Over the past few years, CIR has established world-leading facilities for brain imaging and in-vivo imaging (MEG, EEG, MRI, PET, CT) for humans, non-human primates, large and small animals. Supported by unique radiopharmacy and radioligand development facilities CIR's mission is to develop and introduce next-generation imaging-based diagnostic and therapeutic methods in research and healthcare

Mia Phillipson will present an overview of SciLifeLab's innovative contributions and collaborative opportunities for the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. This session will delve into SciLifeLab's cutting-edge research capabilities, state-of-the-art infrastructure, and successful partnerships that drive forward scientific breakthroughs. Drawing from her experience at SciLifeLab and her entrepreneurial journey with Ilya Pharma, Mia will highlight key strategies for effective industry collaboration, showcasing how SciLifeLab supports and accelerates academia-led innovation.
